Vitasoy History

1940 -

Dr. K.S. Lo was one of the first to recognize the health benefits of soymilk. Dr. Lo was inspired to help fight rampant malnutrition in China by creating an affordable, nutritious soy drink. His first efforts were humble; he only sold nine bottles his first day and then a short time after he was forced to close operations during WWII. His determination never faltered. After the war, Dr. Lo resumed his business and by the 1950s Dr. Lo's company, Vitasoy had become a multi-million dollar business and an household name in its native Hong Kong.

1969 -

The Mizono family founded Azumaya, Inc. a manufacturer of tofu and Asian-style pastas located in San Francisco, CA.

1978 -

Two friends, John Paino and Bob Bergwall founded Nasoya Foods, Inc. manufacturer of organic tofu and soy-based Vegi-dressings and Nayonaise located in Leominster, MA.

1979 -

Dr. Lo's daughter, Yvonne Lo, founded Vitasoy USA, Inc. and introduced Vitasoy's soymilk to the US market. She sold the products store-to-store in San Fancisco's Chinatown. Vitasoy USA, located in San Francisco, CA quickly became the market leader for soymilk in Chinese immigrant communities.

1985 -

Vitasoy USA formulated an all-natural soymilk made from organic soybeans to appeal the mainstream US Consumer.

1990 -

Vitasoy USA, Inc. purchased Nasoya Foods, Inc.

1993 -

Vitasoy USA, Inc. purchased Azumaya, Inc.

1998 -

Vitasoy USA, Inc. opened a state-of-the-art soymilk and tofu processing facility in Ayer, MA.

1999 -

The USDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved a health claim linking soy protein with the reduction of cholesterol. Due to this claim, soy food sales have increased.

2001 -

Vitasoy USA, Inc. corporate headquarters moved to a new facility in Ayer, MA.
